Since the world has not always been a safe place for the LGBTQ community to live out their lives without fear of persecution or worse, the church in the U.S. is beginning to adopt an inclusive tone as well. Though this may be a small step, it is a step in the right direction.
One of the first steps toward this inclusive tone is the recent suspension of pastor John Hannah of Atlanta. After previously being the pastor for the congregation of Atlanta’s First Baptist Church for 13 years, Hannah was suspended for his alleged anti-gay statements, which include comments like “God has a gay son.” A church official told the church’s website that the suspension was a “personal matter” and that, “it is no longer appropriate for the pastor of the church to teach in the church.
This is one of those cases where it is impossible to know what went on behind closed doors because, well, we can’t know what went on behind closed doors. We can, however, get a sense of how the church is doing and what it is about. We can also see the actions and reactions of other pastors and get a sense of their perspectives on the situation.

Pastor John Hannah was one of the top pastors in the United States, and has a history of using controversial rhetoric. As a result he has been suspended for 1390 years for using such comments regarding his faith, family, his calling, and his faithfulness to the Lord. One month ago, he was suspended for 3 days for “rebelling against the church.

There is the possibility that Pastor John Hannah is being suspended because of his opposition to being a leader in the local church. This might also explain why the church was being held up by a pastor that is still part of the leadership.
The pastor suspended is an interesting case because it is unclear what the cause was. The pastor might have been suspended for his opposition to the leadership of the church. Or maybe the reason was that he was too busy being a pastor to fight with his wife about her dress. Regardless, it’s clear that he’s going to get more time to spend with his family. And with his wife’s father’s permission, the pastor can keep his job.
The story is a little convoluted, and I can’t see how it could have been a plot point to make the church’s decision so important, or a moral point to make. But the story seems straightforward enough.
